Strategic Research Agenda
The TNO-ESI Strategic Research Agenda summarizes key directions for future developments in high-tech system design and engineering. It presents our motivation and choices for research topics and is well aligned with the Dutch HTSM Roadmap Embedded Systems and the Horizon 2020 roadmap.
It has been developed in close consultation with an extensive open-innovation network of leading high-tech industries, academic groups, as well as authorities that represent the public interest.
The TNO-ESI Strategic Research Agenda 2012 focuses on latest techniques for design and engineering of high-tech (embedded) systems and applications. The results are not only intended for application by industry, advancement of academia, but are also highly relevant for societal applications, such as mobility, national security or healthcare.
The research agenda addresses a number of key challenges in multi-disciplinary system design and engineering. It emphasizes the fact that the ever increasing complexity of high-tech system design cannot be dealt with by the current, mainly mono-disciplinary design methods and tools. As a result, a more fundamental basis of embedded systems engineering is required to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, quality and costs of the design process.
It comprises four key lines of innovation:
These build on three areas of competence:
- System architecting
- System design
- System integration & test
and result in multi-disciplinary design methods, tools and techniques that are based on a model-based engineering paradigm.
Our ‘industry-as-laboratory’ research concept integrates academic research challenges and industrial application into a single research programme.
Strategic research topics are combined with breakthrough scientific research to develop solutions that can be applied in industrial practice. Following this approach, industry can deploy the latest scientific know-how and expertise, while academia can validate its research in the complexity of industrial practice.
