EIT ICT Labs wins prestigious European race for excellence in innovation

for the new Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) just selected in tough
competition by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The
EIT is a new organisation recently launched by the EU targeting European
competitiveness through better integration across the so called “knowledge
triangle” of higher education, research and innovation. By highlighting the
Future Information Society the EIT recognizes the fact that 80 % of new
developments in the key economic sectors of Europe are based on ICT.
EIT ICT Labs aims at radical transformation of Europe into a knowledge society with an unprecedented proliferation of internet-based services and will establish a new partnership between business and academia based on trust, transparency and mobility of ideas and people. The consortium connects world leading companies, globally renowned research institutes and top-ranked universities all dedicated to speeding up innovation to address the grand challenges facing our society. Committed to an efficient open innovation model, EIT ICT Labs will generate faster transformation of ideas and ICT technologies into new products, services and businesses, boosting Europe’s future competitiveness in all sectors of society.
EIT ICT Labs builds on five co-location centres – Berlin, Eindhoven, Helsinki, Paris, and Stockholm – to create a world-class network of innovation hotspots. These main hotspots are complemented with our extensive network of local and international innovation partners. EIT ICT Labs inspires creative students, researchers, and business people to embrace a risk taking and entrepreneurial attitude and help them to identify new business opportunities. Het
Europese Instituut voor Innovatie & Technologie (EIT) in Boedapest heeft EIT ICT
Labs uitgekozen om Europa een leidende rol in ICT te bezorgen. EIT ICT Labs is
een consortium van bedrijven, universiteiten en onderzoekscentra in Nederland,
Zweden, Finland, Duitsland en Frankrijk. Deze uitverkiezing is een indirect
uitvloeisel van het Lissabonakkoord uit 2000, waarin de Europese leiders
afspraken om de Europese Unie tot de meest concurrerende en innovatie
kenniseconomie van de wereld te maken.
Het EIT stelt gedurende zeven jaar, met mogelijkheid tot verlenging, maximaal 22 miljoen euro per jaar beschikbaar aan het consortium. Het geld zal worden besteed aan onderwijs, onderzoek, ontwikkeling en het naar de markt brengen van innovatieve ICT-producten en –diensten. Andere doelstellingen zijn versnellen van de groei van spin off-bedrijven, aantrekken van internationaal toptalent en in het algemeen bevorderen van economische groei en werkgelegenheid.
EIT ICT Labs is een netwerk dat vijf fysieke locaties telt. In Nederland is dat de High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. De andere locaties zijn Berlijn, Helsinki, Parijs en Stockholm. De Nederlandse deelnemers in het consortium zijn Philips, het Nederlands Instituut voor Research naar ICT (3TU.NIRICT) – waarin al het ICT-onderzoek van 3TU, het samenwerkingsverband van de technische universiteiten van Delft, Eindhoven en Twente is ondergebracht – en Novay (Enschede, het vroegere Telematica Instituut), TNO-ICT, CWI (Amsterdam) en ESI (Eindhoven). De Nederlandse bijdrage aan het consortium wordt gecoördineerd door de wetenschappelijk directeur van CTIT en 3TU.NIRICT, prof. Peter Apers.
Innovaties in de ICT zullen sneller gecreëerd en getest worden, zodat de tijd tussen innovatie en beschikbaarheid op de markt sterk wordt verkort. Academische opleidingen worden vanaf het begin gecombineerd met diepgaande kennis van industrieel onderzoek en ontwikkeling en innovatie, zodat professionals ook ondernemende vaardigheden ontwikkelen. Ook worden multidisciplinaire netwerken gevormd van onderzoekers en ingenieurs met economen, sociale wetenschappers en industrieel ontwerpers. Het netwerk van de vijf co-locaties biedt de mogelijkheid om innovaties beter af te stemmen op een brede Europese markt. De alomtegenwoordigheid van ICT en de groei van zowel aantal als soorten toepassingen leidt er immers toe dat veel mondiale vraagstukken van tegenwoordig alleen zo werkelijk aangepakt kunnen worden.
