Cooperation between TNO-ESI and Fraunhofer IESE ratified through Memorandum of Understanding

The research group for Embedded Systems Innovation (TNO-ESI) of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Research (TNO) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (Fraunhofer IESE) will intensify their cooperation on research and development for high-tech and software-intensive systems. TNO-ESI and Fraunhofer IESE are leading organizations that aim to advance the expertise in software and systems engineering through strategic cooperative research.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Arnold Stokking, managing director of TNO-Industry and prof. dr. Dieter Rombach, director business development of Fraunhofer IESE, during the TNO-ESI Symposium “A Paradigm Shift in Embedded Systems Engineering” in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) on April 19th, 2016.

Smart systems and internet-of-things

Industrial and societal needs increasingly rely on the technological advances in smart systems and internet-of-things. These comprise software-intensive systems and applications that require latest professional capabilities for multidisciplinary design and engineering. Their ever growing complexity requires the development of a more fundamental basis for software and system engineering to ensure lasting effectiveness, efficiency, reliability and security, as well as improve on quality and costs.

It is here that Fraunhofer IESE and TNO-ESI recognize the benefits of a partnership at a time of rapidly evolving scientific and technological knowledge and ever increasing globalization.

Strengthening through cooperation

TNO-ESI and Fraunhofer IESE wish to strengthen each other through cooperation and sharing of knowledge. In this context, Fraunhofer IESE provided a major contribution to the TNO-ESI Symposium “A Paradigm Shift in Embedded Systems Engineering”, which was organized in close partnership with High Tech NL.

The future cooperation aims to address a variety of activities, such as joint research, exchange of knowledge and capabilities, shared services to industry for added-value technology-transfer and competence development.

Arnold Stokking emphasized the importance of the collaboration: “Both organizations represent countries that share a key interest in supporting their high-tech industries. We very much welcome the collaboration with Fraunhofer IESE as leading research organization for the domain of software-intensive systems and applications, thereby complimenting each other’s capabilities”.

Prof. Dr. Dieter Rombach underlined the great potential of this collaboration: “In the past few months, we have identified many joint interests, but also complementary competencies. In the future, we want to use these to improve our research results on the one hand and our proposition to industry customers on the other hand. Challenges in the context of the initiative ‘Industry 4.0’ offer excellent application opportunities in this context.”
