ESI and Society
ESI's vision is to contribute to the development of embedded systems that have a real benefit to our society. We therefore work in close collaboration with the Dutch government and European Commission to ensure that the topics in our research programmes address society's current and future needs.
Safety and security
Embedded systems for surveillance and monitoring are becoming increasingly sophisticated as they need to manage and respond to growing volumes of data in real-time. Applications range from monitoring sea-lanes and protecting our homes and critical infrastructures, to delivering emergency aid quickly where it is needed.
Health and wellbeing
Medical imaging, robotic surgery, telecare systems and biomedical analysis are just a few examples of applications where advances in embedded systems technology will provide significant future breakthroughs.
Transport and logistics
To improve road safety and traffic flow, and increase sustainability, vehicles and traffic management systems require a wide variety of embedded, networked solutions that operate flawlessly in connected, highly reliable and evolvable system-of-systems configurations. Logistic systems with highly automated transport and storage solutions provide exciting opportunities for maximising transport efficiency.
Energy and the environment
The need to ensure reliable energy supplies, with new developments for decentralised and sustainable energy production, requires the development of innovative distributed infrastructures. Similarly, environmental concerns will require new technologies and applications to minimise and process waste streams.
